Gladys Stuart turned 101 Wednesday, an impressive feat maybe, but not where she lives.
She’s just part of the crowd. Of the 75 residents where she lives at Presbyterian Manor in Rolla, Mo., four others have had their 100th birthdays.
“Isn’t that amazing?” said Sue Stoltz, director of marketing and development. “And we have a 102-year-old on the waiting list.”
The women are:
•Mildred Harris, born June 27, 1906, in Anutt, Mo.
•Gladys Stuart, born July 19, 1905, in Springfield, Ill.
•Viola Semas, born Nov. 23, 1905, in St. Louis.
•Grace Wolfson, born July 15, 1906, in Budapest, Hungary.
•Mildred Leaver, born June 10, 1906, in Springfield, Mo.
“When most people were growing up, they didn’t know anyone who was 100 years of age,” Stoltz said. “I think it’s great to see they’re all doing so well at this time in their lives.”
All five had families, and they all worked, in careers that included aerospace illustrating, teaching and bookkeeping. They are quilters, painters and bridge players. And they’re all willing to offer advice. Here are their 10 life lessons:
Lesson 1: “Don’t drink coffee or soda. They’re bad for your health.”
Lesson 2: “Eat lots of fruits and vegetables.”
Lesson 3: “Walk everywhere.”
Lesson 4: “Work hard. It makes you stronger.”
Lesson 5: “Take life easy, and don’t stress over things.”
Lesson 6: “Go outside and get some fresh air.”
Lesson 7: “Drink lots of water.”
Lesson 8: “If you never take a stand, you’ll always be wrong. If you take a stand, you may be wrong sometimes, but you can also be right sometimes.”
Lesson 9: “Be yourself and fulfill your dreams.”
Lesson 10: “Aging is all about attitude, not about number of years.”
No one knows whether the number constitutes a record, but the phenomenon is well worth the celebration planned today at the retirement center. Three of the women turned 100 in June or July.
